Family Demands Justice As Nurse Visiting From US Is Killed

A family in Rangwe, Kisii County, is in agony after their kin lost his life under unclear circumstances.

Speaking during an interview with a local media outlet on October 25, Jackline Omboga demanded answers after the body of her husband, Thomas Oyaro, was found mutilated in a gunny bag.

Omboga stated that Oyaro, who worked as a nurse in Texas, USA, arrived in Kenya on August 14, to spend time with his family during his annual leave.

She travelled to Nairobi to receive her husband and together, they went to Kikuyu to visit their son, a high school student. However, they were unable to see their son and were advised to come on a later date for a parents meeting.

The two travelled to their home in Rangwe, Kisii County. While in Rangwe, Oyaro spent time reconnecting with his family and friends while also spending time on his projects.

Notably, on September 9, he left for Nairobi to attend a meeting at his son's school and returned the following day. He picked up from where he left off, supervising the construction of his hospital.

"We had a construction project at Nyamarambe. We were building a single-floor hospital," Omboga revealed.

On Sunday, October 12, while his wife left to visit an in-law who had just welcomed a baby, Oyaro chose to remain behind and spend time with their son. However, the nurse dragged his feet through the morning having no rush to meet the contractors.

"He never told me the reason but the previous night, he kept on waking from his sleep," Oyaro's wife explained.

Later in the day, he informed his wife that he was on his way to meet the construction foreman and the brick suppliers to settle some dues. That was the last time the two spoke.

At about 8 p.m, she rang him again, asking him what time he would be back home. When the phone went unanswered, she assumed that he was at Sheraton Hotel, a place he frequented to access internet for his online classes.

Oyaro never came home, and his phone went off. She traced her husbands last whereabouts. The foreman and suppliers confirmed that he had indeed paid them before he left on a motorcycle.

The trail led her to the motorbike operator, an acquaintance and finally to a driver of a matatu in Kisii, who confirmed that her husband had boarded the bus to the town.

The driver explained that Oyaro alighted the vehicle much later after the other passengers as he was charging his phone in a power outlet in the vehicle. Nonetheless, he disembarked at about 8 p.m when the bus had to leave.

Omboga filed a missing persons report at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) offices at Nyamarambe police station. Officers begun tracing his phone, but even that was undermined by the poor network coverage in the area.

As the family continued to look for the nurse, a white saloon car with five occupants dropped a piece of luggage at Konate trading centre on October 18, before speeding off. Motorcycle operators ignored the gunny bag, awaiting the owner to claim it.

However, when the bag had overstayed, they decided to open the bag. Inside, they found pieces of a human body, one they could not identify because the head was missing.
